How to Play Cribbage Squares Solitaire

Cribbage (or Crib as it is affectionately known) is an old England pub card game for two players, scored on a funny little wooden board marked out with rows of drilled holes where match stick pegs are usually placed to keep track of the totals. Cribbage is a great game in it's own right and is quite different to the solitaire version which simply adopts the cribbage scoring system for a five card hand.

Cribbage Squares solitaire, is played with a single, well shuffled pack of 52 playing cards. Only the first 17 to 27 cards are used and so there is a slight element of luck involved. A cribbage square consists of 16 cards of 4 columns and 4 rows. Cards are turned face up from the stock one at a time. Each card has to be placed into an empty space in the cribbage square before the next card is dealt. Once placed, it cannot be moved. The game is made slightly easier by the introduction of two reserves which can hold up to five cards each. The top, exposed card of each reserve is always available for play to the cribbage square if circumstances change in its favour. When all 16 cards have been placed in the cribbage square, the next card in the stock is turned face up to count as the Starter. Each of the four rows and four columns then forms a cribbage hand counting the Starter as the fifth card for each of the eight hands. Your final score is the total of all eight cribbage hand scores.
